Dependent education assistance

Question

Not sure if this post is in the correct place. Anyone that has experience with this program I would like to know some things about it.

Does the VA cover the cost for school or a portion of it? Is it similar to the GI bill? And from what I've read it can be used for spouse or children. Is it a one time use?

For any vet with TDIU or 100% P & T award, the DEA apps usually come with the award letter.

I will bump up more info on DEA (Chapter 35 for you)

As a surviving spouse of a 100% P & T I used my DEA benefits to finish my degree at AMU.

I was enrolled in a VA approved college and the VA reimbursed my tuition as I had to pay it first ,for each semester.

I had contact with the VA college liaison person who would forward proof of my payments (and I think they wait to see if you begin the course work) and then VA would pay me an hourly rate based on the time of courses I took. Some were accelerated and some were a regular semester....changing the course hour payment.

Most of the amounts came out to almost all of the tuition I paid.

I got a book grant from the US Marine Corps- a big saving---and most colleges have book grant programs or at least a bookstore whereby expensive current texts might be purchased as used books too.

It is a wonderful benefit to spouses and children who are of college age.

Since then I succeeded on 2 claims that extended my Chapter 35 entitlement. That is all explained here somewhere and is an unusual situation...no need to explain that again....

and also if a adult child has military service, the VA will extend their DEA to include there service time as credit.

In other words, my daughter (OEF vet) was about to turn 26 when she applied for her DEA certificate, ( the normal cut off date for DEA children is age 26),but her DEA was extended by 7 years , per her DD 214 and AD service time..

VA pays student, not school. Tuition is on you unless you go to a state university that has a partial or full tuition remission program for dependents of disabled vets. Not one time use.

There is so much here on DEA Chap 35, under a search I didn't post any links to it

all available under a search ---this might help:

http://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/dea.asp

(VA's explanation of these benefits)

http://www.amu.apus.edu/tuition-and-financing/paying-for-school/veterans-benefits/

I was the first civilian student and graduate at AMU and also their first DEA Chap 35 student.

Mostly everyone else was under the GI Bill. AMU is a Military school.

They now have info on Survivor and Dependent VA benefits at their link, as I hope most colleges and universities do.

I was going to post what brokensoldier posted. My son was on mine after I was rated 100%.

I believe he was getting about a thousand a month 5 years or so ago.

My understanding is you must be permanent 100%. Individual Unemployability, 90% or a 100% rating where there's a C&P pending at some time in future (That is; you could get better) don't get the Chapter 35 'invite' for lack of a better word.

This is what a VA official told me, and it seems to be true.

In short, look at your notification letter. If there's no reference to DEA/CH35 you cannot go further until that changes.
